The US Mint has been under intense scrutiny from the collector community since announcing the re-designed American Silver Eagle in 2020. First announcing they would start the new year off (2021) with the coins bearing the new design, they eventually changed the date to the middle of the year. This meant that the coins issued during the first half of 2021 would have the old design and the remaining coins would have the new design.
The new design was eventually released and received mixed reviews. Whether you like the new design or not, odds are probably still going to get one for your collection.
2022-W Proof Silver Eagle
The US Mint has announced their release dates for this year’s Proof Silver Eagles, and the dates for 2022 are later than past issues. The 2022-W Proof Silver Eagle is the first coin that will be released, and will go on sale April 14th, 2022. In the past, the West Point proof coins have generally been available from February, and many dealers would offer a pre-sale starting in January.
2022-S Proof Silver Eagle
The second proof to be released for 2022 in the American Eagle series will be the San Francisco coins. The 2022-S Proof Silver Eagles will be offered at the US Mint sometime in the Summer with no specific date set quite yet.
2022-W Burnished Silver Eagle (Uncirculated)
The 2022-W Burnished American Silver Eagle will be offered sometime in the Spring of 2022 with a specific date TBD.
Both he 2022 Proof Silver Eagles do not have a mintage limit yet, but I would expect the 2022-S to be somewhere around 200,000 and the West Point coins to be somewhere around 300,000 to 500,000.
